In 18th century France, amid the reign of Louis XIV, men were referred to as the 'peacocks of fashion'. They wore highly embellished Rhinegrave breeches covered in lace and bows made of the finest silks and glossy silks; impeccably clean white linen shirts with sumptuous cravats; and jackets called justaucorps decorated with rich catches and gold braid that stretched from chin to knee.
